There are many different types of water-based exercises designed to meet just about everyone’s interests and exercise abilities. People interested in aquatic exercise have the opportunity to swim independently or participate in an organized class as well as engage in high-level cardio workouts or relax with gentle slow-moving exercises. In whatever form and intensity level you choose, it is important to seek medical guidance and clearance from your physician and physical therapist. Your healthcare team should evaluate your health history, medications, fitness levels, flexibility, muscle strength, and current levels of mobility.
In addition to obtaining clearance from your healthcare team, selecting the appropriate aquatic fitness professional is vital to the overall safety, effectiveness and enjoyment of your swim program. In this section of the Swim for MS Aquatic Center, you will learn about important factors to consider when selecting an appropriate pool, understand how to assess a qualified aquatic fitness instructor, watch demonstrations of numerous aquatic exercises, and learn where to find helpful resources to locate a community-based aquatic exercise program in your area.
